From Danish ES16 over the past few months, we have tested their long cycling pants for autumn and winter use. Elite Roubaix is the name of the model and, in fact, at the time of writing, it is the only pair of long pants in their range.
Pad, or not?
ES16 offers this model in two versions, where the only difference is whether there is a pad or not. The version we have tested here is without a pad.
Personally, I prefer my long cycling pants without a pad, so I can wear my favorite bib shorts with a pad underneath. This provides better protection and I also find that a pair of regular bib shorts fit better in the crotch area than a pair of long cycling pants, where I often experience the pad sitting a bit loose and not staying in place like with classic bib shorts.
No matter what you prefer, the Elite Roubaix is available in a version that suits you.
Roubaix protects you
Elite Roubaix is made from so-called “thermal insulated roubaix” material, which provides good protection against the wind. However, it is not waterproof, but it does have water-repellent and insulating properties. Inside, they are brushed with soft fleece that contributes to both warmth and insulation.
In terms of size, they range from S -> XXXXXL – so all body types are accommodated, and they are unisex – so both men and women can use them.
The upper part is mesh and the straps are flat, making it easy to release heat, and a pair of mesh straps can stretch quite a lot, so they keep the pants well in place – without digging into the shoulders. Flat seams are also used throughout for minimal irritation.

At the feet, there is a zipper so the pants are much easier to put on and take off.

On the back, there are a couple of small reflective elements, while the ES16 logo is printed in white on both thighs.

I have tested the Elite Roubaix winter cycling pants in size S, which is the right size for my 65 kg distributed over 175 cm. They fit snugly, as they should, but still with enough room for a pair of bib shorts underneath – in addition, the material can stretch quite a lot, so they will adapt well to the individual rider.
They have been tested in mixed weather conditions, both on mild days, as well as windy and cold days – and they handle it all. I have not had any issues staying warm so far, where we have “only” reached freezing point, but typically it is not my lower body that gets cold, but rather my hands and feet. The material provides good protection against wind, and light rain as well as spray, which they have been exposed to a few times, is also handled excellently.
Conclusion
Elite Roubaix is a really comfortable pair of “overpants” for cold and unpleasant days on the bike. The fit is good, the material feels nice, and they provide the protection you expect – no fuss! The design is quite classic, which I see as a plus, as it matches the rest of the cycling wardrobe.
The regular price is 699,- for the version without a pad and 799,- for the version with a pad, placing them in the “mid-range” price segment and I think you get really good value for money.
In short – a pair of classic long cycling pants in the right material, with a good fit and at a very sharp price!
